Rites and craftsmanship associated with the wedding costume tradition of Tlemcen

The wedding ritual of Tlemcen in northwesten Algeria starts as the bride’s parents’ home where she dons a traditionnal golden silk dress, surrounded by her married female ralatives wearing their own wedding costumes.
Dressed in an embroidered velvet caftan, wearing a conical hat and adrned with jewellery, several rows of pearls, symbolic henna designs applied to her hands and round red and silver motifs to her face, the bride leaves the parental home covered with a flamboyant silk veil.
