The Ahellil is a poetic and musical genre emblematic of the zenets of Gourara in Southwestern Algeria. It is executed during religious festivities, collective ceremonies and secular celebrations. Closely linked to oasis life, the Ahellil symbolizes the cohesion of the community.
Being at the same time a poetical, polyphonic singing, music and danse, this genre brings together a flute player (tamja), a singer and i chorus who, getting together, execute shoulder to shoulder a gyratory mocement around the soloist.A session consists of « lemserreh » including short chants, the « aougrout » for the most experienced performers and the « tra »for the most accomplidhed ones.
